Mother is a 4,6k word horror one-shot about the wonders of maternity.
One morning, after being visibly under the weather for a while, Princess Celestia announces her pregnancy. She does not know how she got pregnant, who could possibly be the father, or really anything. This is more than a bit worrisome, but they want to see how things develop. Here's a hint: This is a horror story.
We've all come across those one-shots or short stories that you really wish could've been expanded into full stories. This one not only gave me that feeling, but went so far as to make me want to write some ideas I've had in the back of my mind for a while. I'm thankful for that.
Back to the story, I think it was executed as well as it could've been within that wordcount. It's quite fast paced. Once Twilight arrives at Canterlot, things turn frantic and it's a rush to the end. We barely get to see what this... thing has done to everypony, but what is there is good. I can understand we couldn't see the full build up since Twilight was purposefully kept away from Canterlot, but I still think we could've seen some second hand accounts of what was happening over there.
Also, the resolution felt a bit hurried. It was clever, yes. But those last moments needed some breathing room. I still wonder if Starlight was reeeally necessary there.
Also, that last line was corny as hell.
Overall, I think the positives outweighs the negatives. A fun horror story. Check it out if you haven't.
